Introducing: A Cameo by Francis Lee Jaques

Here’s a new piece for the vintage lovers:

We just got our hands on a beautiful little cameo (in a big beautiful frame!) by wildlife artist Francis Lee Jaques! A midwestern boy and WWI veteran, Jaques pursued a career as a self-taught artist. He worked for the James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota and the American Museum of Natural History in New York, painting dozens of dioramas and backdrops. He’s also well-known for illustrating over forty books with black & white scratch board drawings, many of which were written by his wife Florence Page Jaques.

This sweet little portrait of beautiful bobwhite quails is elegant simplicity at its finest. The scale and detail of the illustration are so simultaneously delicate and powerful that the bobwhites have no need for a background – it’s simply quails in flight, in all their beautiful natural glory.

This cameo is also one of the number of illustrations by Jaques used to decorate mugs earlier in the 20th century! We haven’t been able to find any of these exact mugs for sale, but we have found other original works by Jaques – many of which are going for much higher prices! Consider this a great chance to add a beautiful, framed original Jaques to your collection at a wonderful price. And stay tuned for more!
